Lot’s of great practical advice, supplements, books, and links in this Survivor Story.
“A Matter of Life” is a new documentary film in the works that tells the exceptional story of Dr. David Servan-Schreiber, author of Anticancer: A New Way of Life, a book that documents his 20 year fight with terminal brain cancer and his extensive research into a science based anti-cancer diet and lifestyle.
The film features patients, caregivers, doctors and experts who are part of the growing movement that wants to go beyond drugs, and take an integrative approach to fighting cancer and staying healthy. Right up my alley!
I spent some time with the filmmakers earlier this year and it’s clear that they are passionate about being a catalyst for change in the arena of health and the healthcare industry.
I guess they liked what I had to say… cause I ended up in the movie!
Well at least in the trailer anyway, let’s hope I don’t end up on the cutting room floor. LOL!
Nutrition is such a critical part of health and disease prevention, but for the most part the medical industry is ignoring it.
This film could be a major step in raising awareness about nutrition and natural therapies. The world needs to know!
I am so thrilled and honored to be a part of this.
Check out the trailer!

I’ve cooked them side by side on a grill. Not only is Wild Alaskan Sockeye and Copper River Salmon cleaner and healthier. The taste difference is unbelievable.
There’s an article about me and my Naturopath in the Memphis Daily News today.
Block out the flashbacks of being force fed brussels sprouts as a kid.
This an absolutely delicious way to prepare one of the healthiest vegetables around.
Prepare to be amazed.
Craving some comfort food? Me too. Especially in the cold winter months. Unfortunately comfort food is almost never healthy food. So here’s an awesome way to make spaghetti without using noodles.
You’ll never guess what it is!
Hint: spaghetti…but not noodles.
I get asked that question alot. The short answer is: Most forms of soy aren’t healthy. So I don’t eat it much.
Most soy grown today is genetically modified.
Goitrogens interfere with iodine absorption, there are no T4 to provide feedback so your thyroids are constantly producing which creates goiters. (as explained by Justina: betterthancookingmama.tumblr.com)
Isoflavones: genistein and daidzein are a type of phytoestrogen. Too much estrogen can lead to cancer, especially breast cancer.
Processed soy products are the worst: like soy milk, soy meat, soy cheese, soy protein powder, infant soy formula, even tofu.
The healthiest soy is fermented soy: natto, miso, tempeh, and naturally produced soy sauce.
There’s a ton of research about this and info online if you want to know more.

Thanks Jonathan! Wheat gluten could be the cause of your intestinal problems, it can really reek havoc in your guts. Get off it for thirty days and see what happens. There’s a book called The Paleo Solution that explains it really well. Seriously. Check it out.
You might also need to beef up the beneficial bacteria in your intestines. You can do this by taking Probiotics like Primal Defense and eating naturally fermented foods like sauerkraut, raw milk yogurt and kefir, and drinking kombucha tea.
Also I use Tom’s of Maine flouride-free Toothpaste, mouthwash, and aluminum-free Deodorant.
We buy different natural organic soap brands like JASON, Dr. Bronners, and some local home made soaps at the farmers market, etc.
Hey Emily! That’s funny I’m following you too. Didn’t realize it was you! There aren’t very many memphians on tumblr yet…
Yeah I do drink rice milk. It’s sort of a guilty pleasure. It’s definitely healthier than processed cows milk, but I’ve also read that it can be unhealthy because it contains polyunsaturated vegetables oils like safflower and sunflower oil, etc. and can raise insulin levels. I’ve been drinking less of it lately. Almond milk is definitely healthier, but as much as I like almonds, I don’t really like the taste of almond milk.
Stay away from soy milk.
If you’re struggling with eating healthy, you’re normal.
Eating junk food is cheap and easy. Eating healthy is hard and expensive, but you gotta do it. :)
We’ve got a list of recipes we’re getting together to post on the blog, but we’ve been super busy the last few weeks and just haven’t gotten around to it. But they’re coming!
Check out cookclean on tumblr. I like them.
Thanks so much for spreading the word!

Health Nuts: Seeds and Nuts You Should Eat Everyday
Seeds and nuts are super healthy and most of us aren’t eating enough of them. They are a great natural source of vitamins, minerals, protein, fat, and fiber. I’ve been eating a ton of seeds and nuts as part of my anti-cancer diet since 2004, with one exception.
What happens when a Star Wars nerd and a health nerd get together?
Hi Kristina You’re right it’s a tough habit to break.
Carbs are sugar and most of us are addicted to sugar. Grains aren’t that healthy to begin with and modern processing, refining, bleaching, enriching, etc. them makes them super bad for you. There are health advocates that recommend not eating grains ever. I’m not that hardcore, but I try to only eat flourless sprouted grain products like ezekiel bread and manna bread. They don’t spike your insulin like breads and pastas made from flour do. The main thing is finding your motivation. The bottom line is a diet rich in carbs will make you sick or fat, or both. Resisting temptation is not easy, but I would rather deprive myself and be healthy than indulge myself and be sick. Hope that helps!
